Indonesian driving license (SIM)
What it is
- A legal document that lets you drive a motor vehicle in Indonesia.
- Issued by the Indonesian National Police (POLRI).
- Valid for 5 years and renewable.
- Costs about Rp 50,000–120,000.
- There is no provisional license in Indonesia.
- It also serves as official identification once you meet the requirements.
Who can get it
- You must meet administrative requirements, be physically and mentally healthy, and know traffic rules.
- The minimum age varies by vehicle class: 17 for private cars, 23 for commercial heavy vehicles.
- There are different classes for different vehicles.
Where it works
- The SIM is valid in all ASEAN member states without needing an International Driving Permit (IDP).
- For travel outside ASEAN, an IDP can be used, and POLRI issues IDPs if needed.
Penalties and enforcement
- Driving without a license can bring up to 4 months in jail or a fine up to Rp1,000,000.
- If you drive without a valid license while on the road, you can face up to 1 month in jail and/or a fine up to Rp250,000.
- Violations may lead to license revocation or other penalties ordered by court.
- Violations are recorded in the Driver Registry (electronic or paper).
- If you rack up 12 violation points, your license can be temporarily revoked; at 18 points, it can be revoked altogether.

- The SIM is widely used as proof of registration and identification in Indonesia.
