Dread Broadcasting Corporation
Dread Broadcasting Corporation (DBC) was a West London pirate radio station in the early 1980s, known as Britain's first black‑music pirate station. It broadcast from Neasden and Ladbroke Grove to London on 93.9 and 103.8 FM, after starting on AM in autumn 1980 and switching to FM at the end of 1981. Founded by DJ Lepke (Leroy Anderson), DBC played reggae, lovers rock, African, soul, and funk. Lepke’s sister Miss P began at DBC and later had a long career at the BBC. The station hosted guests such as Joe Strummer of The Clash, Neneh Cherry, and author Lloyd Bradley. Miss P said, “There’s never been a station run like DBC. Our format allows us to play music that would otherwise never be heard publicly. We create movement within the industry.” DBC appeared on BBC’s Oxford Road Show in January 1982 and on a 1982 episode of The London Programme on London Weekend Television. The station ceased broadcasting in autumn 1984.
