Dragons of a Lost Star is a fantasy novel by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It is the second book in the War of Souls trilogy and part of the Dragonlance series. It was published in April 2001 by Wizards of the Coast and has 560 pages. The book was a New York Times bestseller.
Plot:
A dragon named Beryl attacks the Citadel of Light and the Silvanesti shield falls, forcing the elves to brace for war. A messenger tells Targonne, leader of the Neraka Knights, about the invasion and an artifact from the Fourth Age. Palin Majere and Tasslehoff Burrfoot try to escape using the Device of Time Journeying, but the device breaks. They manage to slow the draconians with magic from its pieces, then become trapped. Dalamar the elf wizard saves them in the Tower of High Sorcery.
Gilthas, the King of Qualinesti, prepares to evacuate his people as Beryl’s army closes in. Medan, a Neraka knight, sends Sir Gerard away for aid, knowing help will not arrive. In Silvanesti, Mina works miracles in the name of the One God and gains elf support. A traitor named Kalindas is revealed and killed by his brother Kelevandros.
Targonne plots to kill Mina to stop her rise. Mina is poisoned by a ring and seems to die, but she is revived. Targonne goes to Silvanesti for her funeral, only to have his treachery exposed by the revived Mina, who beheads him. Mina and her knights march to Nightlund, while Silvanesti is looted and subjugated.
Palin and Dalamar try to escape the tower; Tasslehoff leaves after finding the returned pieces of the Device. With the help of dwarves, Gilthas begins evacuating his people through tunnels under the city. Gerard is captured by Odila, a Solamnic Knight, then later escapes with Goldmoon using Gerard’s dragon Razor. In Nightlund, Mina meets with Dalamar and plans for the future. Tasslehoff reaches Solanthus to press the Knights’ Council to see Gerard’s innocence.
Laurana, with Medan, defends the elves; Medan is killed by Kelevandros. Laurana wounds Beryl, and a trap is set to finish the dragon with magical ropes. The evacuation tunnels collapse, destroying Silvanesti along with the dragon. In the Tower of High Sorcery, Goldmoon learns the name of the One God and dies after refusing to support Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness.
The novel ends with Mina’s growing power and the war moving into a new phase.
