Doug Carn
Doug Carn (born July 14, 1948) is an American jazz musician from St. Augustine, Florida. He is known for his organ and piano playing and for several albums released on Black Jazz Records in the 1970s. He was married to singer Jean Carne.
Early life and education
Carn studied oboe and composition at Jacksonville University from 1965 to 1967, then finished his education at Georgia State College in 1969. He later taught piano and jazz improvisation at Jacksonville University for several years.
Community work
In 1979, Carn helped found the Lincolnville Restoration and Development Committee in St. Augustine, along with Chris Lightburn and Rev. H. L. Patterson. The group organized the annual Lincolnville Festival, a major local cultural event that continued for years.
Music career
Carn recorded several albums on Black Jazz Records during the 1970s, including Infant Eyes, Adam's Apple, and Revelation. He worked with many notable artists, such as Nat Adderley, Earth, Wind & Fire, Shirley Horn, Lou Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, and Irene Reid. In 1997 he contributed to Bongobop with The Essence Allstars, which featured both solo performances and a duet with Joey DeFrancesco. He was also featured on Cindy Blackman’s album Another Lifetime.
Later years
Since 2010, Carn has performed and toured with his ex-wife Jean Carne, including shows at Ronnie Scott’s in London in 2012 and at Lincoln Center and the Iridium in New York City, as well as the Savannah Jazz Festival in 2013. His 2015 release My Spirit included live performances of selections from his Black Jazz albums and reached No. 46 on the JazzWeek chart. He has performed with many groups and artists over the years, including The Essence Allstars, Calvin Keys, Cindy Blackman, Curtis Fuller, Intuit, Melvin Van Peebles, and Wallace Roney.
