Double Trouble (George Jones and Johnny Paycheck album)
Double Trouble is a 1980 studio album by George Jones and Johnny Paycheck, released on Epic Records. It was recorded from March 1979 to March 1980 at Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville and runs 28 minutes and 10 seconds. The album mostly features covers of 1950s and 1960s rock-and-roll songs, with the opening track, “When You're Ugly Like Us (You Just Naturally Got to Be Cool),” being an original. This is Jones and Paycheck’s only duet album; Paycheck had previously played bass with Jones in the Jones Boys during the 1960s. Produced by Billy Sherrill, the record carries his countrypolitan sound and includes a female backing choir on some tracks.
The album peaked at No. 45 on the Billboard country albums chart. The single “Maybellene” (a Chuck Berry cover) reached No. 7 on the country singles chart. Other singles, such as “You Can Have Her” and “You Better Move On,” were minor hits. Critics have noted the album’s loose, jokey dynamic between the two singers, with some calling it a flawed effort and one of Jones’s weaker albums.
