Dorothy Auman was a potter from Seagrove, North Carolina, and part of an eight‑generation potter family. Her father ran a pottery business, and her grandparents and cousin were potters. Her family settled in the Seagrove area in the 1760s because of the clay and kiln fuel there. Dorothy married fellow potter Walter Auman, and together they started The Seagrove Pottery to sell their work. She also collected and documented the history and traditions of pottery, and her efforts were later recognized when the Mint Museum of Art bought her collection for display. Dorothy and Walter Auman died in 1991 in a highway accident when an unsecured load of lumber fell from a passing truck and crushed their vehicle. They had been awarded the North Carolina Heritage Award in 1989 for their contributions.
