Sultan Ibragimov is a Russian former professional boxer who competed from 2002 to 2008. Born on March 8, 1975, in Tlyarata, Dagestan, he is of Avar Dagestani descent and is Muslim. He stood about 1.88 meters tall, fought as a southpaw, and compiled a pro record of 22 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw with 17 of his wins by knockout.

As an amateur, Ibragimov won silver medals in the heavyweight division at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the 2000 European Championships, and a bronze at the 2001 World Championships. He represented Russia in major events and built a reputation for his skill and power.

Turning professional in 2002, Ibragimov rose quickly with several early knockouts. He fought and won the WBO Asia Pacific heavyweight title and defended it several times, building his profile and improving his world rankings. By 2007, he was widely regarded as one of the top heavyweights in the world.

Ibragimov won the WBO world heavyweight title on June 2, 2007, defeating Shannon Briggs by unanimous decision. He then defended the title against Evander Holyfield in October 2007, winning again by unanimous decision. A planned unification bout with Wladimir Klitschko was finally staged on February 23, 2008 at Madison Square Garden, where Ibragimov lost by unanimous decision, ending his reign as champion.

Retirement followed a few years later. In 2009 he confirmed his retirement, later explaining that chronic issues with his left hand contributed to his decision. Ibragimov is remembered as one of the era’s top Russian heavyweights and one of the few southpaws to win a world heavyweight title.
