Dietmar Bruck
Dietmar Bruck (born 19 April 1944) is a German-born former professional footballer who played as a full-back in the English leagues. He spent the majority of his career with Coventry City, and also played for Charlton Athletic and Northampton Town. After his playing days, he had a career in management and later worked in various non-football roles.
Career summary
- Bruck was born in Danzig (then Germany) and moved to England as a child, growing up in Coventry and attending Bishop Ullathorne RC School.
- He began his football career as an apprentice with Coventry City and made his league debut on 28 April 1961, at the age of 17.
- He became Coventry’s first-ever substitute when he came on in a match against Manchester City on 4 September 1965.
- Bruck was part of the Coventry City side that won the Second Division title in 1967 and went on to play 189 league games for the club, scoring 7 goals.
- In October 1970, he transferred to Charlton Athletic for £15,000, and in 1972 moved on to Northampton Town.
- After leaving Northampton, he played for Nuneaton Borough and Weymouth, where he also served as player-manager. He was sacked as Weymouth manager in January 1977.
- He later managed Redditch United and Racing Club Warwick, and in the 1985–86 season had a spell as caretaker manager of Leamington.
Personal life
- After retiring from football, Bruck worked as a financial consultant for an insurance company and later served as a community champion for Tesco in Coventry. He also spent time as a part-time physical education teacher at Abbotsford School in Kenilworth.
- He was married to Maureen until her death. In 2003, he survived a car crash in which his partner Sue was killed.
Dietmar Bruck’s career shows a long-standing involvement in football as a player and manager, followed by community and work roles outside the sport.
