Diet Coke (song)
Diet Coke is a hip hop song by American rapper Pusha T, released on February 8, 2022 as the lead single from his fourth album, It’s Almost Dry. The track was produced by Kanye West and 88-Keys, and it centers on cocaine dealing and Pusha T’s tough upbringing. The instrumental was originally created in 2004 by 88-Keys as part of a beat tape called The Makings of Crack-Cocaine. The single’s cover art, designed by Sterling Ruby, shows a melting, metallic-looking image with the words “Diet Coke.”
The song opens with a sample of Fat Joe shouting “Yesterday’s price is not today’s price,” set over a piano-driven boom-bap beat. Lyrically, Pusha T raps about selling cocaine and references his background, including a line about a Diet Coke order as a joke. He also expresses appreciation for Kanye West.
Critics from Complex praised the song, complimenting the beat and noting that Pusha T can stay fresh while sticking to one topic, and they approved that he doesn’t diss Drake in the track.
The music video, released the same day, is in black and white and directed by Omar Jones. It features Pusha T rapping while Kanye West dances in a white background and reclining on a sofa.
Pusha first previewed the song during a January 2022 appearance at Nigo’s Kenzo Paris Fashion Week show, and he performed it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in March 2022. In addition, American rappers Jim Jones and Fabolous released a freestyle of the song on February 16, 2022.
