Decision Pending
Decision Pending is a bronze sculpture in Brighton, Michigan, near Mill Pond Park on the north side of Main Street. The figure is about five feet tall and 20 inches wide, and it depicts a dis-proportioned naked man standing upright. It was created by Jay Holland and donated by a local citizens group during the 2006 Brighton Biennial, a project to bring outdoor art to downtown.
Its controversial subject matter and its closeness to the Brighton World War II memorial have sparked public debate. Since its installation, petitions to remove it and counter-petitions to keep it have circulated. The city council has discussed relocating it, but it remains in its original spot.
The statue has become part of local culture, with groups dressing or decorating it for holidays and events. It has earned nicknames like "the elephant man," "the ugly naked guy," and "U.N.G." The name Ugly Naked Guy was reportedly coined by Buddy Moorehouse, founder of the Community Journal. The statue has been vandalized at times and now sits on a stronger pedestal.
