David Latta (rugby union)
David Eric Latta is a former New Zealand rugby union player. He played for Otago from 1986 to 1996, appearing in 161 games and captaining the team in 1993 and 1994. He also played for the Highlanders in 1996 before retiring. Known as "Crazy," Latta was part of Otago teams that won the National Provincial Championship in 1991, beat the British and Irish Lions in 1993, and defeated the Springboks in 1994. In 1994 Otago faced Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield. With two minutes left and Otago leading 20–19, Latta was penalized for offside at a ruck, and Andrew Mehrtens kicked the winning penalty for Canterbury. The decision was controversial, but there was no video replay available at the time.
