Dana TM4
Dana TM4 is a private company from Canada that makes electric vehicle motors, power electronics, and software for electric drivetrains. It began in 1998 in Boucherville as a joint venture between Dana Corporation and Hydro-Québec’s research arm, growing from Hydro-Québec’s labs into a commercial supplier.
The company gained traction in the 2000s through various demonstration programs and later expanded in the 2010s to serve buses, trucks, and other commercial vehicles. By 2018, thousands of electric and hybrid vehicles used TM4 systems.
In 2018, Dana Incorporated became the majority shareholder, while Hydro-Québec kept 45%. In 2019, Hydro-Québec invested C$85 million to maintain that stake and to help Dana TM4 offer electric powertrain systems for light cars, commercial vehicles, and off-highway machines.
TM4’s main products are MOTIVE (compact, power-dense systems for light and off-road vehicles) and SUMO (high-torque, direct-drive systems for buses and commercial vehicles). The company has formed important partnerships, including a China venture with Prestolite Electric Beijing Limited (PEBL) to create Prestolite E-Propulsion Systems (PEPS), producing TM4 powertrains for the Chinese market.
Key moments include:
- 2014–2017: high-volume production in Beijing through PEPS and deliveries to major Chinese bus makers.
- 2017: first NovaBus LFSe buses in Montreal using TM4 powertrains; ongoing supply to Lion Bus and other North American/European customers.
- 2020: new production in Pune, India.
- 2021: new plant in Amal, Sweden.
On May 10, 2024, Hydro-Québec announced it would exercise its option to exit the joint venture, agreeing on a fair market value with Dana.
