Woodlawn is bordered by Catonsville to the south, the Patapsco River and Howard County to the west, Randallstown and Lochearn to the north, and the City of Baltimore to the east. Some people call parts of the area Security, Maryland, because of Security Boulevard and Security Square Mall. The area covers about 9.6 square miles, all land. In 2010, about 37,900 people lived there in roughly 14,600 households, with a mix of White, African American, Asian, and other residents.

Woodlawn is a transportation hub for the Maryland Transit Administration, with several bus routes. The Security Boulevard corridor is part of the proposed Red Line light rail project.

The Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company began in 1941 as a civil defense unit and later provided fire and ambulance services. Its firehouse is on Woodlawn Drive near Windsor Mill. Baltimore County has 26 career fire companies and 33 volunteer ones.
