Clancy Imislund
Clancy Imislund (July 9, 1927 – August 21, 2020) was a key figure in Alcoholics Anonymous and led the Midnight Mission in Los Angeles for many years. He was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and served in the Merchant Marine and the Navy during World War II. Struggles with alcohol caused him to lose jobs, hurt his family, and at one point leave him homeless on Skid Row in Los Angeles. He found sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous in October 1958 and later rebuilt his life and family. In 1974 he returned to the Midnight Mission and became its managing director in 1976, expanding services to include treatment, job training, and housing help. He founded the Pacific Group, helped many people as a sponsor, and assisted Carrie Fisher and Anthony Hopkins in their sobriety, while being a friend of Dick Van Dyke. Imislund died on August 21, 2020, at age 93 from complications related to COVID-19 during hip surgery recovery.
