Damghan University
Damghan University is a public university in Damghan, Semnan Province, Iran. It is funded by the government and admissions are through the National Entrance Exam.
History and growth
The university began in 1988 as the Damghan School of Basic Sciences and started teaching in 1992 with geology students. Over the years, more majors were added. In 2002, it became Damghan University of Basic Sciences, and in 2010 it was renamed Damghan University, with the creation of new schools of Engineering, Arts, and Humanities.
What it offers
Damghan University has eight schools: Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science, Engineering, Arts, and Humanities. It offers about 68 majors and minors across bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs.
Campus and size
The campus is urban and located on the edge of the city. The university has 172 faculty members and about 5,423 students.
Facilities and centers
The Central Library opened in 1989 and has grown to a large collection, including tens of thousands of Persian and Latin books, hundreds of journals, and thousands of theses. The Pistachio Innovation Center, also run by the university, focuses on pistachio farming, processing, health research, and related industries. The Institute of Biological Sciences, established in 2011, has four research groups: Cellular and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Plant Sciences, and Biochemistry. An Incubation Center opened in 2022 to support student and faculty startups. Damghan University Press publishes books and journals, with more than 70 titles by early 2024.
Student life
Most dormitories are on campus—five for female students and two for male students—accommodating more than 1,500 residents.
International students
In 2023, the university received permission to admit international students, mainly from Iraq.
Leadership and contact
The university is affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. The current president is S. Saeedorreza Eslami. The official English site is du.ac.ir/en.
