Cusanus Hochschule
Hochschule für Gesellschaftsgestaltung (HfGG), Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a private, non‑profit university. It was formerly known as Cusanus Hochschule. Its core idea is to critique society and the current economic system and to explore reforms without tying to a single political or religious doctrine.
History and background: The idea began at the Kues Academy for the History of European Thought and the university was founded in February 2014 by academics, students and citizens. It was officially recognized in May 2015 as one of nine universities in Rhineland-Palatinate. The patron is Nicholas of Cusa. In October 2014 it moved to the Renaissance town hall in Bernkastel-Kues, and in December 2014 four programs were accredited. The state granted the academic license in May 2015, and the university was officially inaugurated that month.
Leadership and changes: In 2019, Reinhard Loske became president and the focus shifted to new economic thinking while keeping humanistic aims. In April 2020 the state extended recognition through 2024. On October 1, 2021, the university moved to Koblenz and began operating in the Dreikönigenhaus; Silja Graupe became president. In April 2023, the institution changed its name to Hochschule für Gesellschaftsgestaltung to emphasize its mission to shape society.
Programs: HfGG offers two master programs in the philosophy and history of economics—System and Mindset Change, and Institutional Innovations and Purposes—and a bachelor’s degree in Economic Change and Sustainability. The programs are designed to broaden knowledge of economy, culture and society, with a humanities approach. Many courses are block seminars to accommodate work or other commitments.
Independence and funding: The university remains independent from religious or political interests and is run as a non‑profit. All programs charge fees, which can be offset by grants and endowments; donations are the main source of income. Students helped found a non‑profit organization in 2014 to support activities such as workshops, fundraising, cultural events and student housing.
