Curse of Cthulhu
Curse of Cthulhu is a 1990 Chaosium collection of four horror adventures for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game, which is based on Lovecraft’s works. Three adventures in the book come from earlier Chaosium titles, and there is one original story, The Case, based on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. All adventures have been updated to the game’s fourth edition. The book also includes 18 pages of perforated player handouts, a color gatefold illustration, and a special character sheet.
Call of Cthulhu first appeared in 1981 and has been refreshed with several editions. The 1989 release of the fourth edition helped spark a busy period for the line, sometimes called its golden age. Curse of Cthulhu was written by Keith Herber, with cover art by Nick Smith. Interior art by Earl Geier, Chris Marrinan, Steve Purcell, and Nick Smith, and maps by Michael Blum, Tadashi Ehara, and Carol Triplett-Smith.
In reviews, Wayne Ligon gave the collection 3 out of 5 in White Wolf magazine (April/May 1991), saying it is generally very good, with the story “Fungi” as the standout; the other adventures are solid but could have been expanded into a longer book.
