Crimson Polaris was a Japanese-owned cargo ship built in 2008. It measured about 200 meters in length and could carry around 50,000 tonnes. The vessel was owned by Doun Kisen. On 11 August 2021 it ran aground off Hachinohe, Japan, while returning from Thailand with about 44,000 tonnes of wood chips. The next day it split in two between holds 5 and 6. A large oil spill followed, spreading roughly 24 kilometres long and up to 800 metres wide, with about 1,600 tonnes of oil remaining on board. The stern sank, while the forward section was towed to port for unloading.
