Count of Artois
Count of Artois
The Count of Artois was the ruler of the County of Artois, a region in northern France. The title began around the 9th century and was part of the French nobility (Peerage of France). The first known holder was Odalric. Later, the title was sometimes used as a courtesy by royal family members, such as Charles, Count of Artois. In 1790, during the French Revolution, the countship was abolished and its lands merged into the royal domain. The title is now extinct, with an extinction date of November 6, 1836.
