Corners (TV series)
Corners is a British children's television series that aired on BBC from January 21, 1987, to December 22, 1991. It ran for five series and a total of 94 episodes, with each show lasting about 15 minutes.
Format and characters:
- Viewers sent in questions, mainly about general knowledge, with some about science or philosophy.
- The hosts tried to answer these questions with the help of Jo Corner, an anthropomorphic animal puppet performed by Robin Stevens.
- The show used humor, demonstrations, and songs, often ending in light-hearted slapstick.
Presenters:
- The co-hosts changed over the years. Tracy Brabin presented the first series with Simon Davies. Sophie Aldred became a prominent co-host for much of the run, later joined by Diane-Louise Jordan. Steve Johnson joined in the third series, alternating duties with Davies.
- Jo Corner was the puppet character who helped explain the answers.
Notable details:
- Sophie Aldred later gained fame as Ace in Doctor Who; in one segment she met Keff McCulloch to learn how the new Doctor Who theme tune was created.
- The program was produced at BBC Television Centre by Alison Stewart.
Similar shows:
- A later program with a similar question-and-answer format, Dear Mr. Barker, aired on CBBC in the mid-1990s but didn’t last long.
This short format made Corners a staple of 1980s UK children's TV, known for making learning fun through humor and demonstrations.
