Bridges to Prosperity
Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) is a United States nonprofit that helps rural communities connect to health care, schools, and markets by building safe, durable trailbridges over rivers and gaps. It partners with local governments and communities to design, fund, and construct these bridges, providing technical assistance and helping attract resources. The organization is based in Denver, Colorado, with an operational hub in Rwanda and staff around the world.
Impact in numbers: Since its founding in 2001, B2P has built more than 450 trailbridges, linking over 1.5 million people across 21 countries. A Notre Dame study found that having a nearby bridge can raise farm profits by about 75%, increase labor income by 36%, and lift overall household income by around 30%.
Geographic focus: Much of the current work is in East Africa, where rivers divide communities and hinder access to services. In Rwanda (started in 2019), the program aims to build 200+ bridges by 2024, serving more than 660,000 people. Uganda began a country-wide bridge program in 2018. In Ethiopia, a 2022–2025 program funded by The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust will construct 150 bridges, serving over 1.3 million people.
Approach: B2P uses a community-driven method and practical technology to create lasting impact. Bridges unlock opportunities, extend the reach of other development projects, and help reduce rural poverty. The work emphasizes training locals, sharing step-by-step manuals, and partnering with local institutes. Materials are sourced locally to support nearby businesses. Donated wire rope from U.S. ports helps reduce costs; about 1,800 feet of rope are needed for one bridge.
Recognition and partnerships: Bridges to Prosperity has earned a four-star rating from Charity Navigator and received awards such as the 2016 Eurostar Ashden Award for Sustainability. The program collaborates with many industry partners, Rotary clubs, and foundations to fund and support projects. Universities and engineering programs have contributed expertise over the years.
Leadership and funding: The President & CEO is Nivi Sharma. In the 2021–22 fiscal year, B2P reported about $15 million in revenue and a staff of roughly 110 international professionals.
