Clayton, Washington is a small, unincorporated community and census-designated place in Stevens County. It lies on US Route 395, about 4.5 miles northwest of Deer Park, and has the ZIP code 99110. The town began in 1889 and was named for nearby clay deposits. The Washington Brick Company started in 1893. A major fire in 1908 destroyed most of Clayton, but the town was rebuilt and became known for brick, lime, and sewer pipes, including decorative terra cotta panels made by Italian artisans. Clayton was designated as a CDP for the 2010 census and has about 443 residents. The median household income is around $32,000. The average yearly temperature is about 47°F, roughly 7°F cooler than the national average. The typical resident is about 28 years old, about 9 years younger than the U.S. average. Clayton was the birthplace of Hollywood writer Robert Carson and was home to artist Leno Prestini.
