Clay Street Cemetery
Clay Street Cemetery is a public cemetery in Fairbanks, Alaska, owned by the City of Fairbanks. It was established in 1903 as the first cemetery for the new town of Fairbanks, located on the southeast edge of the original townsite. Many of Fairbanks' founders are buried there, including Mary Pedro, wife of Felix Pedro, who found the gold that started the city. The cemetery officially closed in 1938 when Birch Hill Cemetery opened farther from the city limits, and burials at Clay Street have been sporadic since then. The last casket burial was in 1995 (Irene Mary Sherman, the "Queen of Fairbanks"); today burials are mainly cremations. Clay Street Cemetery covers about 3.5 acres and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982. It is located at 7th Avenue and Clay Street in downtown Fairbanks.
