Cité de l'Or
The Cité de l’Or, meaning The City of Gold, is an attraction in Val-d’Or, in Quebec’s Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. Since 1995, visitors can learn about gold mining by touring the underground Lamaque gold mine and the Bourlamaque mining village.
Gold was discovered in 1923, the Lamaque mine opened in 1935, and it closed in 1985 after the ore ran out. Bourlamaque was designated a provincial historic site in 1979, and the site became a National Historic Site of Canada in 2012.
Today, the mine tour goes about 300 feet (91 meters) underground. Since 2000, one stage of the Tour de l’Abitibi has used the underground tunnels, with cyclists riding through them and up a 17% slope ramp before finishing in the streets of Val-d’Or. Since 2007, the site has also served as a training location for new miners.
The museum is affiliated with the CMA, CHIN, and the Virtual Museum of Canada.
