Cilvia Demo
Cilvia Demo is Isaiah Rashad’s second EP, released January 28, 2014, by Top Dawg Entertainment. It features guests Jean Deaux, Michael Da Vinci, SZA, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock, with production from Sounwave and others like Ross Vega, Mr. Carmack, Joseph L'Étranger, Black Metaphor, The Antydote, Farhot, Chris Calor, D. Sanders, and more. The project is a loose concept album that traces Rashad’s emotional growth from his teenage years into early adulthood, touching on themes such as substance abuse, fatherhood, coming of age, and police brutality. Its sound blends southern hip hop with experimental and lo-fi elements, creating hazy, atmospheric beats and a mix of chopped and screwed vocals with a smooth, slow-burning production style.
Cilvia Demo received universal critical acclaim and built a dedicated following. It appeared on several year-end lists, earning praise for its ambitious production, cohesiveness, and Rashad’s thoughtful lyrics. On Metacritic it scored 82/100 based on 13 reviews. Critics highlighted Rashad’s unique voice and storytelling, with reviews noting the album’s strong production and emotional depth. The EP debuted at number 40 on the US Billboard 200, selling about 8,500 copies in its first week.
Year-end and recognition continued as Cilvia Demo appeared on multiple lists of the year’s best hip-hop releases. Genius named it the seventh best hip-hop release of 2014, Rolling Stone placed it at 21st, and SPIN listed it among the 40 best hip-hop releases of 2014. XXL even included Rashad in its 2014 freshman class, reflecting the buzz created by the release. In 2016, Pitchfork added Cilvia Demo to its list of the 50 Best Rap Mixtapes of the Millennium (at No. 35), noting its impact despite being labeled an EP.
