Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri)
The Kapolri is the head of the Indonesian National Police and a Cabinet member who reports to the President. The current chief is Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who has held the position since 27 January 2021.
Appointment and term
- The President appoints the Kapolri with the approval of the House of Representatives.
- The term lasts until the mandatory retirement age or as decided by the President.
Location and residence
- Residence: Rumah Dinas Kapolri, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta.
- Office: Indonesian National Police Headquarters, Kebayoran Baru, Jakarta.
Historical background
- The position was established in 1945. The first chief was Said Soekanto Tjokrodiatmodjo.
- Over the years, the role and its title changed several times. In the Old Order it had various names; during the New Order it sat under ABRI (the armed forces).
- On 1 April 1999, the Indonesian National Police separated from ABRI and became independent.
Legal basis and selection process
- The position is established by Law No. 2/2002 on the State Police.
- The President can receive recommendations from Kompolnas (National Police Commission) and then nominates candidates to Parliament for approval.
Deputy
- The Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police assists the Kapolri.
