Charles X Distributing Awards to Artists
Charles X Distributing Awards to Artists is a painting by François Joseph Heim, created in 1827. It is an oil on canvas history painting measuring 173 cm by 256 cm and is kept in the Louvre in Paris, where it is shown in the Salon Carré.
The scene shows King Charles X, dressed in the National Guard uniform, awarding the Legion of Honour to artists who exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1824. The ceremony depicted took place on January 15, 1825, and the painting includes portraits of many leading artists of the era. Nearby are the royal official Ambroise-Polycarpe de La Rochefoucauld and the Louvre’s director Louis Nicolas Philippe Auguste de Forbin.
Heim became known for painting scenes from the Bourbon Restoration. The painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1827.
