Chantelle Newbery
Chantelle Lee Newbery (born Chantelle Lee Michell on 6 May 1977 in Melbourne) is an Australian former diver. She won a gold medal in the 10m platform at the 2004 Athens Olympics and also earned medals at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in the late 1990s. She competed in events including the 3m springboard and the 10m platform.
In 1998 she won bronze in the 3m springboard at the World Championships and gold in the 1m springboard at the Commonwealth Games, with a silver in the 3m springboard. At the 2000 Olympics she finished fourth in the synchronised 3m springboard. She went on to win Olympic gold in 2004.
Newbery married fellow diver Robert Newbery in May 2004. They had two sons, Jet (born 2002) and Ryder (born 2006), and later divorced. In 2005 she received the Medal of the Order of Australia and was named in the Australian Institute of Sport's Best of the Best. Her OAM was cancelled in September 2022.
She has faced health and legal challenges. In 2009 she spoke about severe depression and hospitalisation, including suicide attempts. In 2014 she pled guilty to drug charges (possession of meth) and went into a drug diversion program. In 2018 she was charged with theft; she received a three-month prison sentence, but it was suspended and she was released on parole. In 2021 she was found with an ice pipe while shoplifting and pleaded guilty to stealing and possessing drug utensils. In January 2023 she pled guilty to stealing groceries in July 2022 and for unlicensed driving in December 2022. She was sentenced to eight months in jail but released on parole immediately to care for her 18-month-old niece, and driving was disqualified for a month.
