Chandeen
Chandeen is a German music project from Frankfurt known for dreamy, electronic pop. It began in 1990, founded by Harald Löwy and Oliver Henkel, and the name came from a friend’s iguana. The early lineup grew to include Aline Akbari (1991) and Antje Schulz (1992). After two cassette releases, Hyperium Records signed them. Akbari left before the deal and was replaced by Catrin Mallon. With this lineup they released Shaded by the Leaves and Jutland. In 1994 Mallon and Henkel left; Mallon later formed Edera. Stephanie Härich joined in 1995 for the Light Within Time EP and had previously worked with Löwy on another project. They released several records with Hyperium, then moved to Synthetic Symphony (SPV). The 1998 single Skywalking got MTV Europe and VIVA airplay and they appeared on NBC Giga, but they didn’t achieve major success. Löwy started his own label, Kalinkaland, in 2001 to release Chandeen’s music. The group eventually broke up, then reformed in 2007 and released Teenage Poetry in 2008 with Julia Beyer. Mike Brown was a steady member until his death in 2012. They released Blood Red Skies in 2011 and Forever And Ever in 2014. On February 28, 2020, they issued their tenth studio album Mercury Retrograde, with Löwy, Beyer and collaborators Holly Henderson, Kitty and Odile; its Ocean Mind video was highlighted by Billboard. Chandeen continues to make music, blending electronic poetry with dreamy sounds. Genres: dreampop, indietronic. Years active: 1990–2004, 2007–present.
