Celmira Sacramento
Celmira de Almeida do Sacramento dos Santos Lourenço (born 1975) is a São Toméan politician who has served as president of the National Assembly since 8 November 2022. She belongs to the Independent Democratic Action (ADI) party and became its vice president in October 2020. She has a degree in biology.
She was elected to the National Assembly for Mé-Zóchi District in 2010 and was re-elected in 2014, 2018, and 2022. From 2014 to 2018, she led the Network of Women Parliamentarians, and from 2018 to 2022 she led the third commission of the CPLP parliamentary assembly. After the 2022 election, eight women were in the 55-seat parliament. She helped push for a parity law that took effect on 19 November 2022, aiming for 40% women in the next election.
The ADI won the 2022 legislative elections, and Patrice Trovoada became prime minister. Sacramento was elected president of the National Assembly on 8 November 2022 with 52 votes in favor and three abstentions. She is the second woman to hold the post and the first to be democratically elected. She says a key goal of her term is a consensual revision of the Constitution to reform the Assembly.
