Deaner ’89 is a 2024 Canadian action comedy directed by Sam McGlynn and written by Paul Spence. It stars Paul Spence as Dean Murdoch, the metalhead character from the FUBAR films, joined by Star Slade, Will Sasso, and Mary Walsh. The movie is a standalone story, not a FUBAR sequel.

In 1989, Dean and his sister learn from their adoptive parents that they are Indigenous—Dean is Métis and his sister is Blackfoot. They road trip to Calgary to see a heavy metal band, mixing humor with a personal look at heritage. The film draws on Spence’s family history for heart and authenticity.

Details: produced by Eagle Vision, written by Paul Spence, directed by Sam McGlynn, with producers Kyle Irving and Paul Spence. Cinematography by Samy Inayeh, editing by Reginald Harkema, and music by Justin Delorme and Paul Spence. It was released in theaters on September 6, 2024, runs 90 minutes, and is in English.

Reception was mixed: some critics praised the humor and warmth, while others found it uneven or indulgent.
