Castagneto
Castagneto is a small village in Italy. It is a frazione (outlying area) of the city of Teramo, in the Abruzzo region. The settlement sits about four miles from Teramo at the base of the Monti della Laga mountains, with the SP 50 road nearby linking to the village of Ioanella.
Its history goes back more than a thousand years, mainly documented in the records of the local church, Santa Maria de Praediis. The highest point in Castagneto is the Scaricamazza Palace, the home of the Ianuarii-Scaricamazza family, a landmark that can be seen from far away.
From Castagneto, the Adriatic Sea is visible to the east, while the Gran Sasso mountains rise to the west. The Gran Sasso is described as resembling a giant sleeping figure looking upward.
Castagneto serves as a reference point for nearby clusters of houses such as Pantaneto, Collecaruno, Collemarino, Collesansonesco, and Fonte del Latte. It was once the seat of a Catholic parish, and as recently as 1980 it had an elementary school. A post office continues to operate in the village.
Today Castagneto is the focal point for a group of Teramo’s frazioni. This group identifies local needs and works to secure funds and resources from the municipality of Teramo to meet them.
