Cascade AIDS Project
Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) is a nonprofit in Portland, Oregon that fights HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1983 and incorporated in 1985, CAP aims to prevent new HIV infections, support people living with HIV/AIDS, and end discrimination. It is the oldest and largest community-based provider of HIV services, housing, education, and advocacy in Oregon and Southwest Washington. CAP runs Prism Health with clinics in Portland, Vancouver, and Longview, plus a food pantry and Our House (formerly Juniper House), which offers housing and long-term care services for people with HIV/AIDS.
CAP has grown a lot over the years. In 2016 it had about 60 staff and served around 400 people per month. Prism Health opened in 2017, and by 2024 CAP was serving more than 20,000 people per year across all programs. In 2024 CAP partnered with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry to display parts of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The organization receives funding from federal agencies such as the CDC, HHS, and HUD, and works with partners like the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus. Kevin Bumantay is the CEO. Key leaders include Kristi Addis (Chief Programs Officer) and Carrie Samuels (Deputy Chief Programs & Strategy Officer). CAP is governed by a board of directors; as of January 2026, the board president is Kris Young of Nike, with members from local companies, government, and community groups, including Oregon State Representative Travis Nelson. Portland drag performer Poison Waters has worked with CAP for over 30 years and was formerly on the board.
