Sámara is a district in the Nicoya canton of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It was created on November 26, 1971, when it separated from Nicoya. The district covers 109.19 square kilometers and sits just 3 meters above sea level. In 2011, 3,512 people lived there. The administrative center is the town of Sámara. The district includes several other communities, such as Bajo Escondido, Buenavista, Playa Buena Vista, Samaria, Santo Domingo, Taranta, and Terciopelo. Sámara is about 35 kilometers from Nicoya, the region’s main hub. The final stretch of Route 150 from Nicoya to Sámara and on to Carrillo was paved in early 2006. Carrillo Airport is about 5 kilometers east of Sámara.
