Casa del Rey Apartments
The Casa del Rey Apartments is a historic building at 111 Oneida Road in Pontiac, Michigan. Built in 1928–1929 during Pontiac’s housing boom, it was designed by architect Robert O. Derrick with project oversight by William C. Zimmerman and built by Pryale Construction Company. When it opened, the 4-1/2 story building housed 41 apartments, ranging from two to six rooms, and it was said to be Pontiac’s largest apartment building at the time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
Architecturally, the building is a Spanish eclectic style made with yellow and orange brick. It has a C-shaped layout with a courtyard entry facing the street, two porch entries on either side of the courtyard, and decorative blue and pale green ceramic tile panels on the third level and above the entry. The main entry is a heavy, round-topped opening framed with cut stone, and the windows are vertical metal casements. Inside, public spaces feature colorful clay tile details. The lobby is elliptical and includes a fountain, with winding stairs rising to the upper corridors.
By 2014 the building had been vacant for years and was for sale. In November 2024, work began to redevelop Casa del Rey into 50 affordable housing units, a $15.5 million project led by Pontiac natives Gregory and Ronita Coleman and the Oakland County Land Bank Authority.
