Canamar
Canamar is the 43rd episode of Star Trek: Enterprise and the 17th episode of the second season. It aired on February 26, 2003. The story, directed by Allan Kroeker and written by John Shiban, follows Captain Archer and Commander Tucker after they are mistaken for smugglers and placed on a prison transport headed for the Enolian penal colony called Canamar.
On the Enterprise, Sub-Commander T’Pol discovers the pair’s innocence and works to prove it. On the transport, Archer and Tucker are among prisoners including a hardened man named Kuroda and a Nausicaan. When Enolian patrol ships attack, Archer convinces Kuroda to let Tucker help. Tucker creates a plasma diversion, allowing the ship to jump to warp. Kuroda respects Archer, and the two men talk about their pasts—Kuroda reveals he was innocent at 14 and spent years in prison before turning to crime.
Archer and Tucker hatch a plan to save the other prisoners. Tucker is temporarily freed and fights the Nausicaan, while Archer tries to keep Kuroda from blowing up the transport. The Enterprise crew evacuates the dying transport just as Reed and Mayweather arrive. Back on the ship, an Enolian official demands a report, and Archer bluntly tells him that Archer and Tucker were wrongly arrested, questioning how many others are being sent to Canamar.
Production notes: the episode features Mark Rolston as Kuroda and music by Brian Tyler. Filming took eight days in two blocks in December 2002 and early January 2003. The episode was Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Makeup For A Series (Prosthetic) but did not win. Canamar was released on DVD with Star Trek: Enterprise Season 2 and later on Blu-ray in 2013. The reception was mixed, with critics noting strong action and solid performances but calling it more of a straightforward action story than deep social commentary. Guest reviews varied, with some praising the pacing and directing, while others found it formulaic. The episode drew an average of about 4.1 million viewers.
