Wang Wyness
Wang Wyness was a South African rugby union player who played as a centre. Born Melville Richard Kenneth Wyness on 23 January 1937 in Colesberg, South Africa, he earned the nickname “Wang” from his older brother. He attended Marist Brothers’ College in Rondebosch and later Sea Point Boys’ High, and played 12 seasons for Hamiltons RFC.
Wyness made his provincial debut for Western Province in 1962 and went on to win five Springbok caps between 1962 and 1963. He made his Test debut during the 1962 British Lions tour, stepping in after Dave Stewart’s injury, and played in all four Tests against the Lions plus another Test against Australia in 1963. He scored one try for South Africa (3 points under the scoring rules of the time).
He retired to Onrus and died on 6 November 2011 after a battle with cancer, aged 74. He stood about 1.78 m tall and weighed around 73 kg during his playing days.
