Callirhytis perdens
Callirhytis perdens, the ruptured twig gall wasp, is a small wasp in the Cynipidae family. It creates stem galls on coast live oaks, interior live oaks, and canyon live oaks in California. The female lays eggs in the tree stem, and a larval gall forms inside the stem. After the first rains, the larval capsules are pushed out through cracks in the stem and fall to the ground, where they hatch in leaf litter or are eaten by birds and soil organisms. The species is locally common. Taxonomy: Kingdom Animalia; Phylum Arthropoda; Class Insecta; Order Hymenoptera; Family Cynipidae; Genus Callirhytis; Species perdens. Binomial name Callirhytis perdens (Kinsey, 1922). Synonyms: Andricus perdens, Plagiotrichus perdens.
