Call of the Yukon
Call of the Yukon is a 1938 American action-adventure movie from Republic Pictures. It was directed by John T. Coyle and B. Reeves Eason, with a screenplay by Gertrude Orr and William Bartlett, based on James Oliver Curwood’s 1926 novel Swift Lightning. The film stars Richard Arlen, Beverly Roberts, and Lyle Talbot. Much of the shooting took place on location in Alaska, overseen by cinematographer Norman Dawn.
Plot:
Adventurer author Jean Williams lives among the Eskimo in Alaska to gather material for her book. She befriends several animals, including two bear cubs whose mother was killed by hunter Gaston Rogers, a talking raven, and a collie named Firefly who mourns her master, a game warden killed in the line of duty. A pack of wolves and wild dogs led by a wild dog named Swift Lightning threaten the reindeer herd, forcing the Eskimo community to move. Gaston agrees to take Jean to Nenana by dog sled with his furs, but Jean views him as savage. The pair face attacks by wolves, an avalanche, and a river of melting ice.
