Battle of Wólka Węglowa

The battle took place on September 19, 1939, near Wólka Węglowa, close to Warsaw, during the Invasion of Poland. It was a cavalry clash as Polish Uhlan units—the 14th Jazlowiec Uhlans of the Podolska Cavalry Brigade and parts of the 9th Lesser Poland Uhlans—retreated toward Warsaw and met German forces. Colonel Edward Godlewski ordered a cavalry charge. German infantry, supported by hidden machine guns and tanks, opened fire. The Polish force managed to break through toward Warsaw, but with heavy losses: about 105 killed and 100 wounded (roughly 20% of their strength). German casualties were about 52 killed and 70 wounded. The battle ended in a Polish victory.

Strength: Poland ~1,000 men (2 cavalry regiments). Germany ~2,300 men and 37 tanks.
