California is the third studio album by American experimental rock band Mr. Bungle. It was released on July 13, 1999, by Warner Bros. The album marks a shift toward a more accessible yet still unusual sound, mixing Western-influenced backbeats, strings, and vocal harmonies with the band’s quirky style. The title suggests a blend of pleasant moments and chaotic surprises, echoing the dark side of the California dream.

The writing process was less collaborative than on earlier records, with members contributing ideas that came together rather than a joint plan. Recording took place in several San Francisco studios, and the band noted that the project was aided by newer technologies that had not yet become standard for them. Brian Wilson’s Smile and other classic pop influences helped shape the album’s sound.

To support California, Mr. Bungle toured North America, Europe, and Australia, including the SnoCore tour in 2000. The album’s release coincided with a public feud with Red Hot Chili Peppers, who blocked the band from some European festivals after Warner delayed California to avoid clashing with Californication. In retaliation, Mr. Bungle performed a Halloween parody of RHCP, straining their relationship with Anthony Kiedis and affecting their touring.

Critics welcomed California for its bold, unconventional approach on a major label. Pitchfork and AllMusic praised its daring mix of accessibility and strangeness. The album has influenced later artists and is cited by some as a pivotal moment in Mike Patton’s career. Experimental acts such as Igorrr have drawn from its ideas, and Avenged Sevenfold covered the track Retrovertigo in 2017. Mr. Bungle officially split in 2004 after years of tension and touring. All lyrics on the album were written by Mike Patton.
