Roberto Lopes (footballer, born 1992)
Roberto Carlos Lopes, nicknamed Pico, is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Shamrock Rovers, wearing number 4. He was born on 17 June 1992 in Crumlin, Ireland, to a Cape Verdean father and an Irish mother.
Youth clubs: Lourdes Celtic, Home Farm, Belvedere, and Bohemians.
Senior career: Bohemians (2010–2016) with 140 league appearances and 3 goals. In 2017 he joined Shamrock Rovers and has stayed there since, with over 250 league appearances and 18 goals as of late 2025.
International career: He played once for Ireland U19 in 2011. Since 2019 he has represented Cape Verde at senior level, debuting in a 2–0 win against Togo. He has participated in Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, including the 2023 edition where Cape Verde reached the quarterfinals.
Notable achievements: Won the 2019 FAI Cup with Shamrock Rovers after a penalty shootout against Dundalk, the club’s first cup win since 1987 and 25th overall. He was part of the Shamrock Rovers squad that won the 2020 League of Ireland title.
In October 2025, Cape Verde qualified for the 2026 World Cup after beating Eswatini 3–0, making Lopes the first League of Ireland player to reach a World Cup.
