Cai Cai Camp
Cai Cai Camp (Cai Cai Airfield), also known as Cai Cai Special Forces Camp or Dan Chu Camp, was a U.S. Army and ARVN base on the Plain of Reeds in southern Vietnam, northwest of Bình Thạnh Đông. It was established in April 1965 by the U.S. Army’s 5th Special Forces Group (Detachment A-412), about 30 km from Bình Thạnh Đông and 3 km from the Cambodian border. The camp frequently faced Viet Cong attacks and suffered severe floods in 1965 and 1966. In 1967, Detachment A‑412 was redesignated Detachment A‑431. On January 18, 1968, soldiers from A‑431 fought Viet Cong forces near the camp; Sergeant Gordon Douglas Yntema was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. The base was transferred to the ARVN 76th Border Rangers in September 1970. It has since been turned into farmland and housing.
