Elaeocarpus hygrophilus is a flowering plant in the Elaeocarpaceae family. It grows as a tree in Southeast Asia, reaching about 10–25 meters tall. The tree bears olive-like fruits, which are sometimes pickled and eaten in countries like Thailand and Vietnam. In Thai, the fruit is called makok nam (มะกอกน้ำ). Some stories say Bangkok’s name comes from Bang Makok, a village named after this fruit.
