Oscar Sobalvarro
Oscar Manuel Sobalvarro Garcia, born December 23, 1960, in Jinotega, Nicaragua, is a former Contra commander who fought the Sandinista Front. His alias was Commandante Ruben. He worked as a farmer and salesman. He joined the Nicaraguan Resistance on March 20, 1980 and led the Salvador Perez Regional Command. His brothers Luis Armando (executive officer) and Julio Cesar (commanding officer) also fought in the movement; all three are former Sandinista fighters.
He played a key role in talks to demobilize the Contras after the 1990 elections, when Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista Front lost to Violeta Chamorro. The FSLN insisted demobilization first before handing over power.
In 2021, Sobalvarro is vice-president of the center-right Citizens for Freedom (CxL) party in Nicaragua, part of the Citizen Alliance with Pamuc. The alliance named four candidates for president: Arturo Cruz, Juan Sebastián Chamorro, Noel Vidaurre, and Américo Treminio. Opponents hope for a unified candidate against Daniel Ortega. Sobalvarro serves as the CxL representative in these negotiations.
