Cabinet of the Governor of Ohio

The Cabinet helps the Governor run the state. It has 26 departments, each led by a Director or Commissioner who advises the Governor and runs the department.

How it works
- The Governor appoints the Director or Commissioner for each department, and the Ohio Senate must confirm the appointment.
- There are no fixed term limits for these leaders; they serve until the Governor changes them or they resign.
- Cabinet members are part of Ohio’s Executive Branch and have broad authority to enforce state laws. They may issue official opinions, proceedings, and decisions that have legal effect.

Rulemaking and codes
- Notices and proposed rules from the departments are published in the Register of Ohio.
- These rules are codified in the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC).
