Cabinet of Jamshid Amouzegar
Cabinet of Jamshid Amouzegar (Imperial Iran)
The cabinet was announced on 7 August 1977, after Prime Minister Amir-Abbas Hoveyda resigned on 6 August. The Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, appointed Jamshid Amouzegar as prime minister. The government had 23 members, mostly from the Rastakhiz Party.
Its main goal was to push a liberal economic program to curb inflation. It also reduced financial aid to mosques and religious organizations, which worsened relations with the religious establishment.
The cabinet lasted until 27 August 1978, when Amouzegar resigned. His resignation came amid growing religious demonstrations and the Cinema Rex fire in Abadan on 19 August 1978. The next cabinet, the II Cabinet of Jafar Sharif-Emami, was formed after him. Most ministers from the Hoveyda era stayed in their posts, and many cabinet members were from Rastakhiz.
In total, the cabinet included 23 members.
