C. J. Spiller
Clifford "C. J." Spiller Jr. is an American football coach and former running back who is currently Clemson’s running backs coach. He was born on August 5, 1987, in Lake Butler, Florida, and he starred at Union County High School before playing for Clemson from 2006 to 2009.
At Clemson, Spiller was a standout, especially in 2009 when he earned unanimous All-America honors and was named ACC Player of the Year. That season he rushed for 1,212 yards and 12 touchdowns, had 503 receiving yards and four receiving TDs, and set the school’s record for kickoff return touchdowns. Clemson retired his No. 28 jersey in his honor.
Spiller was drafted ninth overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2010 NFL Draft and played nine seasons in the NFL for the Bills, Saints, Seahawks, Jets, and Chiefs. He finished his NFL career with 3,451 rushing yards, 12 rushing TDs, 198 receptions for 1,484 yards and 9 receiving TDs, plus 2,056 return yards and 2 return TDs. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2012.
After his playing days, Spiller returned to Clemson as a graduate intern in 2020 and was promoted to running backs coach in 2021, a role he holds today.
