Bulolo United F.C.
Bulolo United Football Club, sometimes called MMJV Bulolo United because of its sponsor, is a semi-professional soccer team from Lae in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. The club was founded around 1987.
Early years and regional success
Bulolo United first appeared in the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship in 1987. They were in Group A and, despite defeating Bengeta 12–0—the competition’s biggest win—finished fourth and did not reach the semi-finals. In 1998, they reached the final of the Lae Regional Championship but lost 3–2 to local rivals Mopi. The team later played in the Bulolo Premier Division, winning the league title in 2006 and 2007.
National Soccer League era
On 16 August 2011, Bulolo United was announced as one of two new clubs for the 2011–12 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League (NSL). They were sponsored by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture and included players from Bulolo district along with a few with NSL experience. Bulolo’s opening NSL match was a surprising 3–1 win over Tukoko University, but they followed with a 3–0 loss to Hekari United. By season’s end, they had 5 wins, 2 draws, and 11 losses (including a 5–1 win over Petro Souths), finishing in 6th place.
Attempts to return and the 2017 season
Ahead of the delayed 2013 season, Bulolo announced interest in returning but did not participate. The club returned to national competition in 2017 as part of the breakaway National Premier League, placed in the Northern Conference. They won only one game (vs Lahi United) and lost the other nine.
