Bued River

The Bued River is a roughly 80-kilometer river in Luzon, Philippines, mainly flowing through Benguet and Pangasinan, with a part in La Union. It starts in the mountains near Baguio City, where its headwaters form on the southeastern side of Baguio. The river travels down through Tuba and along the foothills of the Santo Tomas mountain range, then enters the Pangasinan province and passes through Sison, San Fabian, Pozorrubio, San Jacinto, and Mangaldan.

In Mangaldan, the Bued joins the Anglican River to form the Cayanga River, which then flows into Lingayen Gulf. The river is often heavily silted and has been dredged occasionally to improve flow. A dike has been built in several barangays to prevent flooding into nearby towns.

Silt comes from mine tailings from copper and gold mines in Tuba, Benguet, and from landslides and quarrying along Kennon Road. The river can overflow during heavy rains and typhoons, and erosion has affected Binday village in San Fabian since the 1970s. Pollution has also been a concern, with fecal matter from about 1,000 pig farms along Kennon Road and mining/quarrying waste entering tributaries near the Lion’s Head monument.
